The Grand Prismatic Spring
The Grand Prismatic Spring
The Grand Prismatic Spring is a piece that was commissioned by Joseph Alessi written for Trombone and Wind Orchestra. This is the second piece I've written for Joe and it's my incredible honor to have written this piece for him. In Yellowstone National Park, there is an extraordinary spot where the geyser "Old Faithful" resides and near it is a hot spring. The park calls this section of the park "The Grand Prismatic Spring." It is the 3rd largest hot spring in the world, but what makes it so special is not in the size of the spring but the different coloration the spring is able to produce due to extreme organisms living in the hot water. The result is a vast spectrum of color in part of the heat of the spring and the light in which these organism capture, thus giving the subtitle to the grand prismatic spring, Prism of Light, Spectrum of Life. This piece will take you through a day of the grand prismatic spring with its evolving harmonies, exciting rhythmic figures, and fluid lyricism. An arrangement for Trombone and Piano is also available. Just click here.
