Polarities is a work that explores the concept of differentness or things that are in opposite nature (yin and yang, good and evil, order and chaos, Jedi and Sith.) The genesis and concept of this piece are presented in the first two bars, quickly evoking the feeling of a polarizing effect. The first bar begins with an explosive statement in dynamics and harmony. We go from loud to soft and use polytonality (Bb major triad over B major triad over C minor triad.) As the piece progresses, the listener will hear the different sections and how they unfold into either a state of beautiful harmony and lushness or a state of trepidation and anxiousness.
